Kapil Sharma Cafe shooting: Kapil Sharma's newly opened restaurant, Kap's Cafe, in Surrey, British Columbia, was targeted by gunfire on Wednesday evening, following an act of terrorism claimed by a Khalistani terrorist, who alleged that the show of Indian comedian Kapil Sharma made fun of Nihang Sikhs. The Surrey Police Service (SPS) reported that police officers were dispatched to the cafe around 1:50 am on Thursday in response to reports of shots being fired. "Upon police arrival, it was rapidly apparent that shots had been fired at the business, which damaged the property, but staff were still inside," the SPS stated. No one was injured, although at least a dozen bullet holes were seen in the windows of the cafe on Thursday morning.
Babbar Khalsa Terrorist Claims Responsibility
Harjit Singh Laddi, who has been identified as being affiliated with the proscribed terror group Babbar Khalsa International (BKI), has taken responsibility for the attack. On social media, Laddi wrote that he, along with Toofan Singh, who too is affiliated with BKI, had carried out the attack as there had been "humorous" remarks about the dress and behavior of Nihang Sikhs made by a guest on The Kapil Sharma Show. He complained that constant demands for an apology from Kapil Sharma were not met. "A character was dressed in Nihang Sikh uniform and some witty comments were made regarding their behavior. These were taken as offense and injured the religious feelings of the group. No religion or spiritual orientation can be ridiculed under the pretext of comedy," wrote Laddi in the post. Nihang Sikhs are a unique traditional martial order in Sikhism, recognized by their blue uniforms, traditional arms, and strict following of traditional Sikh warrior traditions.
In a passionate Instagram post, Kap's Cafe expressed that the crew was still "processing the shock" but was committed to standing firm against violence. "We opened Kap's Cafe with dreams of spreading warmth, community, and cheer through great coffee and good conversation. To have violence cross that dream is devastating. We are processing this shock but we are not giving up," the message stated. The café expressed its gratitude to Surrey Police and Delta Police for a speedy response and thanks to the community for its support.
Surrey Police Service stated that the investigation is at an early stage and links to other incidents and possible motives are under investigation. "There is no suspect description at this time," an SPS representative added. The Vancouver Sun said the police know of the social media claim of responsibility but have not verified it themselves. Kapil Sharma's Kap's Cafe launched in Surrey on July 4. The comedian, who is among India's favorite entertainers, hasn't made an official statement yet. The cafe staff ended their statement to fans with, "Let's stand firm against violence and make Kap's Cafe a place of warmth and community once again. Thank you and see you soon under better skies."
