Indian comedian Kapil Sharma’s recently launched restaurant, Kap’s Cafe, in Surrey, British Columbia, was the target of a gunfire attack late Wednesday night. According to initial reports, multiple rounds were fired at the cafe by gunmen who arrived in a vehicle and fled the scene shortly afterward. Surrey police responded swiftly, sealing the area and launching a detailed investigation. Bullet holes were found on the building’s exterior and on nearby residential structures. Authorities have recovered spent bullet casings, and forensic teams are analysing CCTV footage for leads.

Harjeet Singh Laddi Claims Responsibility

Khalistani terrorist Harjeet Singh Laddi, an alleged operative of the banned group Babbar Khalsa International (BKI), claimed responsibility for the shooting through an online message. Laddi, who is also on India’s most wanted list, alleged the attack was in retaliation for remarks purportedly made by Sharma.

Kap’s Cafe is Kapil Sharma’s first venture into the restaurant business, launched recently with his wife GinniChatrath, who is also actively involved. The soft opening of the cafe had taken place just days before the attack, making the timing of the incident particularly alarming.

Laddi's Terror Links

Laddi’s name is not new to security agencies. He, along with his associate Kulbeer Singh alias Sidhu, has been accused of orchestrating and supplying weapons for the assassination of VHP leader Prabhakar in Punjab’s Nangal region in April 2024. They are also under investigation for funding terror operations and recruiting operatives for targeted killings in India.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) in India has previously flagged Laddi for his international terror links, especially in Canada, where pro-Khalistan elements have had a visible presence in recent years.

Kapil Sharma's Kap's Cafe

Earlier this week, comedian and television host Kapil Sharma, along with his wife Ginni Chatrath, officially ventured into the hospitality industry with the opening of The Kaps Cafe in Surrey, Canada. The couple shared glimpses of the café’s soft launch on social media, where videos posted by the official Instagram handle showed a packed house and enthusiastic crowds lining up to visit the new eatery. The café expressed gratitude to patrons for their support and patience in handling the high demand. Kapil and Ginni also reposted congratulatory messages and stories from friends and fans, including one from fellow comedian Kiku Sharda.
