A historic diplomatic moment at the White House sparked fierce online backlash after conservative commentator Laura Loomer expressed outrage over the presence of Syrian supporters greeting President Ahmed al-Sharaa during his landmark visit to Washington. Loomer, a vocal ally of US President Donald Trump, took to the social media platform X to denounce the gathering, accusing authorities of allowing supporters she labelled as “jihadi loving Muslims” onto the grounds.

Loomer shared a video showing al-Sharaa greeting and shaking hands with a crowd waving Syrian flags and chanting religious slogans outside the presidential residence. “Wow. Did they really allow for a mob of jihadi loving Muslims to be present on White House grounds to fawn over this ISIS terrorist as they waved Syrian flags and chanted ‘TAKBIR! ALLAHU AKBAR’?” she wrote. In another post, she added, “You’ve got to be kidding me. AM I SEEING THIS CORRECTLY? I want to vomit. I thought we were deporting the jihadists? Not inviting them into the President’s home…”

Historic First Visit By A Syrian Leader

The visit marked the first time a Syrian head of state has set foot in the White House since Syria gained independence in 1946. According to Syrian officials, talks between Trump and al-Sharaa focused on strengthening bilateral relations, addressing regional security, and easing sanctions. As reported by Al Jazeera, discussions also touched on broader international concerns linked to Middle Eastern stability.

Al-Sharaa, 43, rose to power earlier this year after overthrowing longtime autocrat Bashar al-Assad. Since assuming office, he has embarked on a global tour, presenting himself as a reform-minded leader seeking to restore Syria’s international standing. One of his highest priorities has been lobbying for the removal of stringent US sanctions imposed during Syria’s civil conflict.

US Signals Softening On Sanctions

Following the meeting, the US Treasury announced a 180-day extension of its suspension of enforcement of the Caesar sanctions, signalling potential diplomatic momentum. Trump praised the Syrian president, telling reporters, “He comes from a very tough place, and he’s a tough guy. I like him.” He added, “We’ll do everything we can to make Syria successful… We have peace now in the Middle East—the first time anyone can remember that ever happening.”

Referencing al-Sharaa’s past ties to militant groups, Trump remarked, “We’ve all had rough pasts.” Until recently, al-Sharaa was designated a “Specially Designated Global Terrorist” by the US, at one point carrying a USD 10 million bounty. Upon arrival, he was ushered through a discreet side entrance, limiting media access compared to traditional state welcomes.
