Amid growing tensions between Canada and India, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau sharply criticised his own intelligence officials, calling them ‘criminals’ for linking Indian leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, to violence in Canada.
PM Trudeau criticised the leaking of top-secret information to the media, stating that criminals responsible for these leaks have consistently misrepresented the facts. He emphasised the unreliability of such leaks, reinforcing the findings of a national inquiry into foreign interference, which highlighted the inaccuracy and criminality of those leaking sensitive information to media outlets.

The Globe and Mail reported that Canadian security agencies believe Prime Minister Modi was aware of the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar and other violent actions. The article, citing an unnamed senior official, suggests that Canadian and US intelligence linked these operations to Indian officials, including Home Affairs Minister Amit Shah, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, and Foreign Minister S Jaishankar.
"We have seen, unfortunately, that criminals leaking top-secret information to the media have consistently gotten those stories wrong. That's why we had a national enquiry into foreign interference, which has highlighted that criminals leaking information to media outlets are unreliable on top of being criminals," said Trudeau.
