Controversy erupted after an Indian-origin man was captured dancing at the World War II Memorial in Washington, DC. The video was posted on TikTok and featured a man and a woman dancing on the National Mall.

The video soon gained widespread attention and was criticised by netizens and attracted the attention of the federal authorities as well. The man featured in the video had been identified as Madhu Raj, while the details of the woman are yet to be ascertained.

The World War II Memorial honours 16 million Americans who were parts of the armed forces. Nearly 4000000 troops lost their lives in the conflict.


Netizens React

The viral TikTok had soon snowballed into controversy, with people calling it disrespectful. Shooting videos at war memorial had hurt the sentiments of many. A user commented, “My grandfather was one of them, and he took a bullet in his leg. The DC WW2 Memorial is a place of remembrance, not a TikTok set.”

Another claimed, “Anyone aspiring to go abroad must be subjected to a year-long compulsory intensive course in etiquette and civic education with a test at the end of it before leaving India."

Several people also sided with the man, saying that it reflected the celebration of happiness even in the times of war. “It’s a beautiful reminder of how our diaspora carries joy and resilience, even in challenging times. Celebrating our culture abroad is a testament to our strength as a community," one user wrote.

A fourth asked, “What law did they break making a reel?"

Immigration Authorities Examine Rules

The incident has drawn scrutiny from the US immigration authorities, who are examining whether the act could affect Raju’s visa status, according to an India Today report.

According to US immigration law, visa holders can face revocation of their status if they are found guilty of certain offences or engage in conduct considered in violation of the terms of their stay.

Although dancing itself is not an offence, performing activities at federal monuments without permission can be considered an offence.
