Lunar Eclipse 2025: A rare astronomical event is set to unfold tonight as a total lunar eclipse, popularly known as a Blood Moon, graces the night skies on September 7–8. It will be visible to nearly 85 per cent of the world’s population, making it one of the most widely viewed eclipses in recent years.

This year’s September full moon is unique because it is not the Harvest Moon, the name usually given to the full moon closest to the autumn equinox. That title will belong to October’s full moon, set to rise on October 6, 2025. This rare shift adds to the distinctiveness of the upcoming eclipse.

According to TimeandDate.com, the lunar eclipse will be visible from almost all populated continents, including Asia, Europe, Africa, Australia, New Zealand, parts of North America (Alaska), South America’s eastern regions, and across the world’s oceans. From bustling cities like London, Paris, and Mumbai to quieter skies over the Pacific, millions will have the chance to witness this celestial show.

Why Does The Moon Turn Red?

A total lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth aligns perfectly between the Sun and the Moon. As the Earth’s shadow covers the Moon, sunlight bends through Earth’s atmosphere. The longer wavelengths, reds and oranges, filter through, painting the Moon in a glowing scarlet hue. This phenomenon gives rise to the term Blood Moon.

Exceptionally Long Total Phase

What makes this eclipse stand out is its duration. According to India Today, the total phase will last approximately 82 minutes, making it one of the longest in recent memory. Skywatchers will have more than an hour to enjoy the Moon in its deep red glow, making it an ideal opportunity for photography and stargazing.
