Nepal Gen Z Protest 2025: Nepal is inching closer to appointing its first female prime minister as former Chief Justice Sushila Karki emerged as the frontrunner to lead a caretaker government. The interim administration is expected to oversee fresh elections, following days of violent protests led by youth groups that forced Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli to resign earlier this week.

Talks between the President, the Army, political leaders, and representatives of the Gen Z movement stretched until midnight on Thursday but ended without a breakthrough. But sources confirmed to PTI that the youth-led coalition proposed Sushila Karki as the next head of government. Two options were considered for forming the new government, dissolving Parliament or retaining it. However, the agitating group has agreed to seek a solution within the constitutional framework.

Curfew Eased But Tensions Remain

The crisis intensified after police action during protests earlier this week left at least 34 people dead and hundreds injured. Oli, who faced growing criticism over corruption and an unpopular social media ban, stepped down on Tuesday after demonstrators stormed government offices in Kathmandu.

The President has accepted Oli’s resignation but directed his cabinet to continue in a caretaker capacity until a new Council of Ministers is formed. Authorities have imposed strict curfew measures across Nepal to prevent further escalation. Restrictions were partially lifted on Friday morning to allow citizens to purchase essential supplies.

The Ministry of Home Affairs confirmed curfew relaxation from 7 am to 11 am, with limited movement allowed again between 5 pm and 7 pm before night curfew resumes. Soldiers remain deployed in key areas of Kathmandu, guarding government buildings and intersections.

While Karki enjoys wide support among protesters, there are signs of resistance from the Army, which has reportedly favoured pro-monarchy figure Durga Prasai. Gen Z leaders, however, insist that only a leader with no ties to existing political parties can restore public trust. Sudan Gurung, president of the “We Nepali” group and a prominent face of the protests, declared, “We are ready to accept the leadership of former Chief Justice Sushila Karki. The interim cabinet must reflect our expectations, and the youth will monitor its functioning.”
