Pakistan’s Army Chief Asim Munir has drawn online attention after meeting United States Vice President JD Vance. Netizens have pointed out the difference in outfits worn by Munir while meeting American and Iranian delegations. The leaders and officials of both countries have arrived in Islamabad, to attend peace talks mediated by Pakistan on Saturday.

After Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs posted two videos showing how both delegations were received by officials, the contrast in Munir’s outfit quickly caught people’s attention on social media. During his meeting with Iranian officials, he was seen wearing a military uniform. However, when he met Vance, he chose to wear a formal suit instead. This led to speculation about what might be the reason behind this change in attire.

Amid the wild guesses, Al Jazeera in its report, quoted a former Pakistan General, who said that there is no fixed instruction on what an army chief must wear when receiving delegations. “Usually, their staff suggests what they should wear, or other times it is the desire of the chief himself, what influence he wants to project. Under the Musharraf era, when I was in service, he would meet delegations sometimes in uniform and other times in a suit,” he told the news outlet.
