Iranian representative Gholamhossein Darzi on Wednesday confronted US Ambassador Mike Waltz at the United Nations Security Council meeting by displaying photographs of children and other victims of the war in Iran. He accused Washington of carrying out attacks on Iran and its civilian infrastructure and challenged the US representative to explain the deaths of children in a school strike in Minab.

Iranian Envoy Challenges US Ambassador

Responding to US allegations against Tehran, Darzi displayed photographs of children killed in the February 28 attack on the Shajareh Tayyebeh Primary School for Girls in Minab. He questioned the US representative over the deaths of innocent children and called for those responsible to be held accountable. In a video posted by the Iran Embassy in South Africa on X, the envoy is heard saying: “Why did you kill Iran’s innocent children?”

The school was reportedly hit on the first day of the war involving the US, Israel and Iran. According to Iranian officials, at least 160 schoolchildren and teachers were killed, and more than 95 others were injured in the attack. Iranian authorities have also cited higher death tolls, with figures ranging from 168 to around 170 children.

Tehran Accuses US Of Attacking Civilian Infrastructure

Darzi further rejected Washington's allegations against Iran, saying the US representative had failed to provide a convincing justification for the military action against Tehran. He accused the US of making unsubstantiated claims about Iran's nuclear programme to divert attention from its own actions. He also alleged that US and Israeli attacks had hit residential neighbourhoods, schools, hospitals, airports, bridges, energy facilities, railway networks and cultural sites.

Darzi maintained that Iran was the target of aggression rather than the country responsible for starting it. He accused Washington and Israel of attempting to portray themselves as victims while avoiding responsibility for the consequences of their military actions. Earlier, in September, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian had also held up pictures of the children killed during the attack in his address to the 81st UN General Assembly.
