BRICS Summit 2026: In geopolitics, sometimes leaders send messages to rivals through optics. At the BRICS Summit 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was seen holding hands with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin. PM Modi shared the photo from the BRICS summit on his social media handle.

This photo of PM Modi, Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping sent a strong message to the world from the platform of BRICS 2026. Sharing this photo on the social media platform X, Prime Minister Modi wrote, 'BRICS Summit 2026 is starting in Delhi.' The photo is seen as a symbol of unity against US President Donald Trump's aggressive economic policy and his tariffs, which he uses to compel partner nations to sign deals with America. In February last year, Trump declared that BRICS is dead after threatening 100% tariffs on member nations if they attempt to replace or undermine the US dollar.

Global South Must Become A 'Rule Shaper': PM Modi

Meanwhile, PM Modi said on Saturday, while opening the two-day annual BRICS summit as trade friction and geopolitical instability trigger growing economic headwinds, that the Global South must become a "rule shaper" and the existing "pyramid of privilege" structure in global governance must give way to a "platform of partnership".

The prime minister also unveiled a 10-point roadmap for global governance reform under the BRICS framework while advocating for a 'Seafarers' Emergency Support Network' to safeguard sailors facing heightened risks from ongoing global and regional crises. PM Modi made the remarks in the presence of a galaxy of world leaders including Putin, Xi Jinping, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi.

In his remarks, PM Modi hailed BRICS for emerging as a key global body and called for a "new and ambitious agenda" for the grouping for the next 20 years so that it can effectively handle pressing global challenges.

"The current structure of global governance resembles a pyramid: power and decision-making are concentrated at the top, while the lower tiers consist of nations that are affected by these decisions but unable to shape them," PM Modi said. "Today, the Global South stands in the front row of global crises but in the back row of decision-making. We must transform this 'pyramid of privilege' into a 'platform of partnership' -- one where every nation has a voice, every member has a stake, and the development of humanity lies at the heart of every effort," he said.

Putin Criticises Western Trade And Financial Restrictions

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday stressed the BRICS grouping was not against anyone and Moscow was open to working with the whole world.

He criticised Western trade and financial restrictions, saying competition was increasingly taking "ugly forms" at both corporate and state levels. "Over the last 5 years, more than 40% of the world's GDP has been produced by the BRICS countries, whereas the contribution of the so-called G7, the Great 7 - I don't know why they call that - stands at only 29%. Speaking about the growth of the world economy over the same period, we see that more than half of that growth has been accounted for by BRICS, whereas the G7 has only accounted for 18%. Why is that? The answer is simple: BRICS countries account for more than half of the world's population, and that is why they have great, dynamic, vibrant domestic markets," he added.
