Russia Plague: Concerns have been raised worldwide after a 28-year-old laboratory technician died of a pneumonic plague infection in the Irkutsk region of Siberia. While Russian authorities have not confirmed that she died from plague, the regional governor later said the illness was pneumonia of unknown cause. Following the detection, around 200 people who may have had contact with her have been placed under observation, local media reported.
What Happened In Russia
The woman, identified as Darya Shipilova, worked at the Anti-Plague Research Institute in Shelekhov. According to reports, she may have been exposed after a laboratory test tube broke. This account, however, has not been verified. Shipilova later developed severe pneumonia and died in early October. Following her death, the situation has been described as a suspected plague-related incident and not a confirmed plague outbreak.
The incident has renewed discussion over plague, its transmission and how many counties are affected by it. The World Health Organisation (WHO) describes plague as a disease caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis. It usually circulates among small mammals and their fleas. Humans can become infected through infected flea bites, contact with infected tissues or materials, or by inhaling infectious respiratory particles from someone with pneumonic plague. If not treated early, it can turn fatal.
WHO Map Shows Countries Hit By Plague
The recently updated WHO map shows countries that reported human plague cases during 2019-2025. It does not mean that every country without reported cases is completely free of plague, Some countries are expected to have natural plague foci in animals. During this period, most confirmed human cases were reported from Congo, Madagascar. Additional cases were reported from countries including Kenya, Uganda, China and Mongolia.

Is India Covered In Map?
India is not among the countries that reported confirmed human plague cases to WHO during 2019-2025 However, the WHO cautions that absence of reported human cases does not necessarily mean that natural plague foci doesn’t exist.
US Monitors Development
Meanwhile, the US State Department is actively monitoring unverified reports concerning a suspected fatal case of pneumonic plague originating within Russia. Speaking to Fox News, a State Department official confirmed that Washington is closely monitoring the situation and has also urged Moscow to release all known information.
