- Trump promises $5,000 dividend if Republicans win midterms.
- Pledge made despite US national debt reaching $40 trillion.
- President links rising oil prices to Iran conflict.
In a major development, US President Donald Trump made a whopping promise worth USD 5,000 (Rs 4,75,000) to every adult American if his Republican Party wins the upcoming midterm elections. According to him, America has been performing outstandingly in terms of business growth.
Speaking at a packed event, President Trump said that he would issue a USD 5,000 dividend to every adult in the United States if Republicans maintain control of Congress in November’s election. “If the Republicans win the House of Representatives and the United States Senate, both of them… because of our tremendous strength and success economically, I will issue a dividend to every adult citizen in the United States of America for $5,000,” Trump said at a Republican convention in Dallas.
“The only caveat I have is that the dividend that we’re making must be spent in the United States of America,” he added.
No further details were immediately available about the proposal. The major announcement came days after the US Commerce Department reported that growth in gross domestic product, the nation’s output of goods and services — decelerated from a 2.1 per cent pace from January through March. The second-quarter growth number was unchanged from the department’s first estimate.
However, it said that consumer spending — which accounts for about 70 per cent of US economic activity — increased at a healthy 3.4 per cent annual clip, up from 0.5 per cent in the January–March period. I
nterestingly, America, the world’s richest country, now carries a national debt of around USD 40 trillion — nearly ten times India’s nominal GDP. India’s nominal GDP currently stands at approximately USD 3.92–4.15 trillion, making it one of the largest and fastest-growing major economies in the world.
What The Daily Jagran analysis suggests
In terms of America, the latest figure, revealed on August 19, paints a concerning picture of the US economy under the Trump administration. An analysis by The Daily Jagran shows that the current administration has added nearly USD 1 trillion in debt roughly every five to six months. In March 2026, the total stood at USD 39 trillion; in October it was USD 38 trillion; and it has now reached USD 40 trillion. The debt is expected to cross USD 41 trillion by this winter or early next spring.
Still, the President’s announcement came as a surprise to many. Before boarding a flight to Texas, when Trump was asked about the rising oil prices and when Americans could expect the prices to go down, he told US citizens to bear the brunt until the midterm elections are over. He linked the Iran conflict to the rise in global oil prices, which have climbed above USD 100 a barrel.
“Well, I think it’s very easy to explain to America. All you have to do is say, ‘Will you let Iran have a nuclear weapon?’ And the answer is no,” he said when asked how he would explain the increase to Americans. The President claimed Iran’s economy was in disarray and that its currency had lost its value.
“Right after the election, oil prices are going to be tumbling downward,” Trump said. “They’re going to be tumbling down, and we’ll get them down.” “I think, for gasoline, we’ll get them below $2 a gallon,” he added. When asked whether prices would decline before the midterms, Trump said: “I think it’s going to take a little bit longer than the midterms.”
