A controversial policy at Nigeria’s Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU) has ignited a fierce online debate after a viral video showed female students being physically checked to confirm if they were wearing bras before being allowed into examination halls.

The 10-second clip, widely shared on X, shows female students in a queue being frisked by female staff. The video immediately sparked outrage across social media platforms, with many Nigerians condemning the act as a violation of privacy and bodily autonomy.

Students’ Union Defends Policy

Muizz Olatunji, president of the OOU students’ union, defended the policy in a statement on X. He said the “no bra, no entry” rule was not new and that the university promotes a dress code aimed at maintaining a “respectful and distraction-free environment.”

Olatunji also stated that the university encourages female students to avoid “indecent dressing capable of making the opposite sex unnecessarily lust after them.”

Calls For Dialogue And Dignity

Despite defending the rule, the students’ union acknowledged the controversy and expressed willingness to engage with the university administration. Olatunji said the union would “explore alternative approaches to addressing indecent dressing, focusing on respectful and dignified interactions between students and staff.”

While some users on social media called the policy “foolishness of highest order,” others argued it was a necessary step to maintain campus decorum. One user posted, “There are better ways to enforce dress codes without subjecting students to such demeaning treatment.”

Supporters of the move claim it promotes discipline and discourages inappropriate attire, but critics argue it represents institutional overreach and misplaced priorities.

Lack Of Official University Statement

As of now, OOU’s management has not issued an official response, which has further fueled speculation and criticism. The silence from university authorities has led many to question the transparency and accountability of the institution’s administration.
