North Korea’s recent Global Positioning System (GPS) jamming attacks have disrupted South Korean civilian and military operations, sparking concerns over air and maritime safety near the border. The South Korean military reported on Saturday that North Korea interfered with GPS signals from the border areas for the second consecutive day, affecting numerous flights and vessels and escalating tensions between the rival nations.

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff issued an urgent statement urging North Korea to ''stop GPS interference provocations immediately'' and warning of accountability for any consequences. ''We urge North Korea to stop GPS interference provocations immediately and strongly warn that it will be held fully accountable for any resulting consequences,'' the South's joint chiefs said in a statement.

What Is GPS Jamming?

GPS jamming is a form of electronic warfare where signals from ground-based devices overpower or block satellite communications. In this instance, North Korea has used jamming tactics near the border cities of Kaesong and Haeju, impacting dozens of civilian aircraft and vessels.

A GPS jamming attack involves the transmission of powerful radio frequencies that interfere with or mask authentic GPS signals. Such disruptions may cause aircraft and other vehicles reliant on GPS for navigation to deviate from their paths, raising the risk of accidents. Some militaries further employ 'GPS spoofing', wherein false GPS signals are transmitted to mislead enemy navigation systems, potentially causing planes or drones to crash.

South Korea issued alerts for increased vigilance in these areas, especially as GPS disruptions pose severe risks to navigation and aviation safety, with analysts highlighting potential dangers to Seoul’s Incheon International Airport, located just 100 kilometres from the North Korean border.

North Korea’s GPS jamming activity, combined with provocative actions like launching propaganda-laden balloons into South Korea, reflects ongoing psychological and electronic warfare strategies. These actions have led to widespread concerns, especially in light of North Korea’s recent intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) test and South Korea’s own ballistic missile response.

While South Korea’s military managed to prevent major operational disruptions from North Korean jamming, experts warn that continued interference could lead to serious incidents, including potential aviation accidents. In May, North Korea attempted similar GPS tampering, which, though unsuccessful in hindering South Korean military operations, underscored the fragility of critical civilian infrastructure under electronic assault.
