Pakistan Records Over 1,900 Child Abuse Cases In 6 Months; 80% Reported From Punjab

Pakistan recorded 1,914 cases of violence and abuse against children between January and June 2026, with 80 per cent of the reported cases coming from Punjab, Senator Sherry Rehman, vice president of the Pakistan Peoples Party, said. She described the figures as extremely worrying and called for immediate action to strengthen child protection mechanisms.

"We are talking about children who should be protected by their families, communities and the state, but who are becoming victims of violence and abuse. This cannot be seen as a series of isolated incidents. It requires immediate and coordinated action," she said.

Rehman said the high number of cases reported from Punjab raises serious questions about the effectiveness of existing child protection mechanisms. She stressed the need to examine whether children can safely report abuse and whether institutions responsible for their protection have adequate resources and systems in place.

45 Per Cent Incidents Took Place At Home

"These figures require a thorough investigation to ensure whether children can safely report abuse, whether protection institutions are adequately equipped and whether perpetrators are being effectively brought to justice," she said.

According to Rehman, 43 per cent of the accused were known to the victims, while 45 per cent of the reported incidents took place inside the children’s own homes. The figures have raised further concerns about the safety of children in environments where they are expected to receive protection.
