The Bahawalpur headquarters of Pakistan-based terror group Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) has been labeled "Permanently Closed" on Google Maps after targeted Indian air strikes as part of Operation Sindoor. The location, officially referred to as Jamia Masjid Subhan Allah, was among the nine terror centers targeted during the pinpoint strikes on May 7, which were undertaken in response to the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22 that left killed 26 civilians.
Google Maps Marks JeM HQ As "Permanently Closed"
Placed in the middle of Bahawalpur in Pakistan's Punjab province, around 100 kilometers from the border with India, the JeM complex was damaged in the attack, as evidenced by recent satellite imagery. Post-strike visuals show the compound’s roof collapsed in multiple places, with several buildings within the premises reduced to rubble. Although the site was openly presented as a religious school, government sources and intelligence reports as cited by News18 says that it had been used as a training and indoctrination facility for JeM recruits. Reuters reported that students were evacuated from the camp days prior to the expected Indian airstrike, although family members of JeM founder Masood Azhar were said to have stayed on the premises. The airstrike was reported to have killed 13 individuals, of which 10 were members of Azhar's family.
After the air strike, Google Maps also changed the status of the JeM HQ to "Permanently Closed". As per Google's policy, labels are imposed based on a mix of user reports, business owner verification, algorithmic indicators, and third-party confirmation. The company's internal systems consider extended mark inactivity, building damage, and lower foot traffic before settling on mark status change. Local guides, satellite partners, and public imagery reportedlt conformed the closure. In conflict or high-impact areas, such closures tend to be initiated by apparent structural damage or media-reported destruction.
Nine Terror Camps Hit In Operation Sindoor
Besides the Bahawalpur compound, Indian forces struck eight other camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) in the simultaneous airstrike. They are:
• Markaz Taiba, Muridke (Lashkar-e-Taiba HQ)
• Sarjal Camp, Sialkot (Hizbul Mujahideen)
• Mehmoona Joya Camp, Sialkot (Hizbul Mujahideen)
• Abbas Camp, Kotli (Lashkar-e-Taiba)
• Gulpur Camp, Kotli (Lashkar-e-Taiba)
• Syedna Bilal Camp, Muzaffarabad (Jaish-e-Mohammed)
• Sawai Nala Camp, Muzaffarabad (Lashkar-e-Taiba)
The precision targeting was said to have been carried out after thorough surveillance and satellite data analysis. Speaking to the nation following the operation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared, “Terrorist bases like Bahawalpur and Muridke are universities of global terrorism. The big terrorist attacks of the world, be it 9/11, the London Tube bombings, or the major attacks in India over the last many decades, have some connection to these hideouts.” This statement underscores India’s growing policy of proactive counter-terrorism measures and signals a continuation of its zero-tolerance approach to cross-border terror activities. JeM, led by UN-listed global terrorist Masood Azhar, has been the mastermind behind some of the most fatal terror attacks within Indian territory, including:
• 2001 Indian Parliament attack
• 2016 Pathankot Air Force base attack
• 2019 Pulwama suicide bombing, which claimed 40 CRPF lives
Despite international sanctions, JeM remains operational from Pakistani soil under various aliases, often using religious institutions as a front.
