Chilean President Gabriel Boric Font praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a “key player" in geopolitics, stating that he has a “weird status" where he can engage with Russian President Vladimir Putin as well as Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelenskyy. He said that this was a phenomenon no other world leader could achieve.

“You’re committed to peace in the world. You’ve a weird status nowadays that you can talk to every leader of the world. Mr Putin, Mr Trump, Mr Zelenskyy, the European Union, the Latin American leaders, and Iran. That is something that no other leader can say now. So you’re a key player in the geopolitical atmosphere nowadays," Boric said while attending a banquet hosted by President Droupadi Murmu in his honour on Tuesday.

His remarks came in reference to the Prime Minister’s meeting with Putin in July last year in Moscow and his meet with Zelenskyy the very next month during his historic visit to Ukraine. While PM Modi reiterated his stance of “not an era of war" before Putin in front of the media in July, he visited Ukraine in August, carrying message of peace and stressing on returning to dialogue and diplomacy to end the over three-year-long war.

Chilean President In India

The Chilean President is on his first visit to India from April 1 to 5 at the invitation of PM Modi. His visit is aimed at bolstering economic, political, and cultural ties between the two nations.

He met PM Modi on Tuesday and held wide-ranging talks focusing on strengthening the relations in areas such as trade, defence, critical minerals, and health. The two leaders announced starting negotiations on a comprehensive economic partnership pact.

The Prime Minister described Chile as an important “friend and partner" for India in Latin America.

“India and Chile may be at different ends of the world map, there may be vast oceans separating us, but nature has linked us with unique similarities," Modi said in a media statement.
