Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday welcomed the historic release of all hostages held in Gaza for over two years, calling it a testament to the courage of their families and the concerted efforts of global leaders.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi said, “We welcome the release of all hostages after over two years of captivity. Their freedom stands as a tribute to the courage of their families, the unwavering peace efforts of President Trump and the strong resolve of Prime Minister Netanyahu. We support President Trump’s sincere efforts to bring peace to the region.”
The announcement comes after a devastating conflict that erupted on October 7, 2023, when Hamas militants attacked Israeli towns, resulting in over 1,200 fatalities, including dozens of Americans, and the abduction of roughly 250 individuals. Israel’s military operations in response lasted nearly two years, claiming more than 67,600 Palestinian lives, according to Gaza health authorities.
The final 20 surviving Israeli hostages were freed on Monday under a U.S.-mediated ceasefire, marking a significant milestone towards ending the prolonged Gaza conflict. Israeli authorities confirmed the safe transfer of hostages from Gaza by the Red Cross, sparking emotional reunions at “Hostage Square” in Tel Aviv, where thousands cheered, hugged, and wept in relief. Simultaneously, Palestinian detainees released by Israel arrived in Gaza and the West Bank as part of the ceasefire arrangement.

Trump Addresses Israeli Parliament: Calls for Lasting Peace
President Donald Trump addressed Israel’s Knesset, emphasizing the importance of translating military victories into enduring peace. “The skies are calm, the guns are silent, the sirens are still, and the sun rises on a Holy Land that is finally at peace,” he said. Trump’s statement comes ahead of a summit in Egypt, where leaders will discuss the next steps of the Gaza truce and broader Middle East peace initiatives.
Families greeted released hostages with immense joy and relief. Video footage captured parents receiving phone calls from their loved ones, their faces lighting up in disbelief and happiness. Viki Cohen, mother of hostage Nimrod Cohen, shared her overwhelming emotions: “I am so excited. I am full of happiness. It’s hard to imagine how I feel at this moment. I didn’t sleep all night.”
Despite the breakthrough, significant challenges remain. The governance of Gaza post-conflict, the disarmament of Hamas, and the future of a Palestinian state remain unresolved. Washington, along with Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey, continues to mediate the next phase, including an international “Board of Peace” under Trump’s guidance.
