Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a comprehensive bilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the SCO Summit in Tianjin, focusing on trade, cross-border security, and broader strategic cooperation. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri highlighted that both leaders agreed that India and China are partners rather than rivals, with shared domestic development goals taking priority. “The common interests of the two countries outweigh their differences, and differences should not be allowed to turn into disputes,” Misri said, emphasising that a stable India-China relationship benefits the 2.8 billion people in the two nations and contributes to a multipolar Asia and world order.
Progress Since Kazan
The leaders noted progress since their last meeting in Kazan in October 2024, particularly in people-to-people relations. Both sides reaffirmed principles to guide future bilateral engagement, while also discussing the critical importance of peace and tranquillity along the border for sustained development. The successful disengagement last year and the ongoing maintenance of calm along the border regions were acknowledged as positive steps.
Xi’s Suggestions For Enhanced Cooperation
President Xi outlined four suggestions to further upgrade bilateral relations: strengthening strategic communication and trust, expanding exchanges and cooperation, achieving mutual benefits, accommodating each other’s concerns, and deepening multilateral cooperation. Prime Minister Modi responded positively to all these proposals.
Economic And Trade Discussions
Both leaders discussed economic issues, including ways to increase and balance trade, facilitate investment, and enhance policy transparency and predictability. “There was recognition of the role that the Indian and the Chinese economies can play in stabilising world trade,” Misri noted.
Other areas of cooperation covered cross-border rivers, joint efforts against terrorism, and multilateral engagement on regional and global challenges. Modi also extended an invitation to President Xi for the 2026 BRICS Summit in India, which Xi accepted, pledging China’s full support for India’s BRICS presidency.
Meeting With Cai Qi
Additionally, Prime Minister Modi met with Mr. Cai Qi, member of the Chinese Communist Party Politburo Standing Committee, to share his vision for India-China relations. Mr. Cai reiterated China’s interest in expanding bilateral exchanges across various sectors, addressing economic concerns, and strengthening relations in line with the earlier consensus reached between Modi and Xi.
