In a shocking case, a 42-year-old woman, identified as Mirella, has been rescued after reportedly being held captive by her parents for 27 years in southern Poland. Mirella was first reported missing at the age of 15, but local authorities have confirmed that she had been confined inside her family’s apartment in Swietochlowice, about 180 miles south of Warsaw.

Neighbours first raised an alarm in July when they heard disturbances coming from the apartment late at night. “It all started with voices coming from that flat. It was very late when we called the police,” Luiza, a neighbour, said this to the local media. Police responding to the call discovered Mirella in a severely frail and emaciated state. Despite initial insistence from Mirella and her mother that nothing was wrong, authorities transferred her to a hospital after seeing her physical condition.

Doctors treating Mirella revealed she was on the brink of death, suffering from untreated wounds on her legs and multiple infections. Neighbours described her appearance as resembling that of an “old lady,” with her arms and legs extremely weak. As per local media outlets, she had been confined to a small room for most of her life and deprived of basic hygiene and necessities. Friends assisting with her recovery said she had no access to essentials such as underwear or sanitary pads. Even minor movements caused her severe pain due to the fragility of her legs.

Parents Allegedly Hid Her for Decades

According to local media outlets, Mirella’s parents allegedly misled the community for nearly three decades, claiming she had gone missing at age 15. When questioned, they reportedly said she had been reunited with her biological parents. This prolonged deception left neighbours shocked and outraged, struggling to comprehend how such inhumane treatment could go unnoticed for so long.

Efforts are also underway to help her regain independence and rebuild a life outside her parents’ control. Police in Swietochlowice are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding Mirella’s captivity. Authorities have not released details regarding potential charges against her parents, but confirmed that the case remains under scrutiny.
