Russian President Vladimir Putin told US President Donald Trump during a phone call on Thursday that Moscow will not back down from its objectives in Ukraine, even as both sides reiterated their willingness to pursue a negotiated resolution to the ongoing conflict. The Kremlin disclosed the details of the nearly hour-long call, during which Putin also pledged to maintain dialogue with Kyiv.

Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov briefed reporters after the conversation, stating, “Our president said that Russia will achieve the aims it set, that is to say, the root causes that led to the current state of affairs… Russia will not give up on these aims.”

He further noted that Putin reaffirmed Russia’s readiness to continue negotiations, despite ongoing hostilities. Putin emphasised that peace talks on Ukraine are ultimately a matter between Moscow and Kyiv, reflecting Russia's stance that external forces, particularly Western nations, should not dictate terms.

Trump Pushes For Swift Resolution

The call was reportedly initiated as part of Trump’s broader effort to position himself as a dealmaker capable of ending the war in Ukraine. According to reports, Trump raised the issue of resolving the conflict quickly, urging diplomatic solutions rather than prolonged warfare.

The Kremlin noted that both leaders expressed a shared desire to seek a negotiated solution and confirmed their intention to stay in close contact.

Interestingly, Putin interrupted a public event to take the call, reportedly telling the audience, “Please, don’t be angry. I understand that we could talk more, but it’s so awkward to make [Trump] wait; he could get offended.”
