Following large-scale US airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities, fears of potential radiation leaks have surfaced across the region. Iranian authorities and international watchdogs have assured the public that no radiation contamination has been detected outside the targeted areas.
Reza Kardan, deputy director of the Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran and head of the National Nuclear Safety System Centre, stated on Sunday that there were no signs of nuclear radiation or contamination outside the struck sites.
“Preliminary plans had been made and measures had been taken to protect the safety and health of the dear people of the country,” Kardan said, as quoted by IRNA. “Despite the criminal actions this morning in attacking nuclear facilities, due to the previously planned measures, no radiation contamination or nuclear radiation has been observed outside these sites and facilities.”
Kardan added that residents living near the affected sites, including Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan, can “continue their normal lives without any worries.”
IAEA Confirms No Radiation Detected
The reassurance from Iran’s nuclear agency was echoed by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). In a statement released Sunday, the IAEA confirmed that no increase in off-site radiation levels had been reported.

IAEA will provide further assessments on situation in Iran as more information becomes available.
“Following attacks on three nuclear sites in Iran, including Fordow, the IAEA can confirm that no increase in off-site radiation levels has been reported as of this time,” the agency stated. It added that further assessments would be provided as more data becomes available.
Fordow Targeted by US B-2 Stealth Bombers
The US airstrikes were carried out using Northrop Grumman B-2 Spirit stealth bombers, known for their ability to evade air defences and deliver precision-guided munitions to fortified targets. The Fordow facility, a deeply buried uranium enrichment site, was one of the primary targets. US President Donald Trump described the strike as “very successful,” stating, “Fordow is gone.”
Iran’s Atomic Energy Organisation has condemned the strikes as a “savage assault” but insisted that the country’s nuclear program, described as a “national industry”, will not be derailed. According to Iranian state media, the National Nuclear Safety System Centre conducted immediate safety assessments, and no release of radioactive material was recorded by radiation detectors.
Neighbouring countries are also monitoring the situation. Saudi Arabia has publicly stated that it has detected “no radioactive effects” in the Gulf region following the US strikes on Iran.
