India’s former High Commissioner to Pakistan, G Parthasarathy, has slammed Pakistan’s current Army Chief General Asim Munir, drawing parallels between his recent actions and the missteps of former military ruler Pervez Musharraf during the 1999 Kargil conflict. The veteran diplomat suggested that Munir is repeating history, and not in a good way.

Speaking to news agency ANI, Parthasarathy recalled his time in Islamabad during the Kargil conflict, “When I was in Pakistan, Pervez Musharraf initiated the Kargil conflict by taking over high mountains in the Himalayas. We taught them a lesson and drove them out of Kargil.”

He argued that General Asim Munir is now making similar strategic blunders, risking another humiliation at the hands of the Indian Army. “I am not surprised that General Asim Munir is repeating the same mistakes that Musharraf made,” he said.

Civil-Military Rift In Pakistan?

The former envoy also raised concerns about the disconnect between Pakistan’s political leadership and its powerful military. “Their operations against India were not put up to the PM or approved by the PM by all accounts. If that has been done, it has not been spoken about.”

He linked this back to past behaviour during the Kargil episode, when then-Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was left in the dark about military movements. Now, with Shehbaz Sharif seeking peace, the ex-diplomat sees a repeat of political sidelining, “We have Shehbaz Sharif now asking for peace as his brother had sought with us during Kargil.”

‘Proud to Be Indian’: Credit To Modi Govt

Parthasarathy praised the Indian response to the current tensions, especially highlighting the role of the armed forces. “All credit to Mr. Modi and everyone in his government, but most credit to our Army, the armed forces as a whole.” He concluded with a remark reflecting both national pride and strategic satisfaction, “All I can say is, I am very proud to be an Indian and I am having a good laugh at my Pakistani friends.”
