The sudden death of Jane Lee, a well-known Singaporean entrepreneur and owner of the popular food outlet Sumo Salad, has shocked the local business community. Lee passed away on Saturday, July 19, just a day after she posted explosive allegations on Facebook accusing an Indian employee of faking a workplace injury to claim compensation.

Lee, who had rebranded her eatery to “Sumo Well,” alleged in two detailed Facebook posts that her employee, Sran Kiranjeet Kaur, staged an accident as part of a fraudulent scheme. The posts were published on July 18, one day before Lee was found dead under circumstances that are now raising concern among her followers and associates.

Accusations Of Premeditated Injury

In her posts, Lee claimed that Kaur, a foreign worker from India, pretended to have slipped on an escalator while taking out the rubbish. According to Lee, the incident occurred just two days before the worker’s employment contract was due to end.

"She was supposed to leave early that day, but instead she stayed back and staged the incident,” Lee wrote. “It became clear to me that the accident was premeditated, likely as an attempt to file a false work injury claim.”

Lee further alleged that Kaur’s husband and a legal firm were involved in “coaching” her on how to manipulate Singapore’s work injury compensation system. She claimed to possess surveillance footage that contradicted the worker’s injury claims and stated that Kaur’s behavior changed drastically in the presence of doctors, where she “exaggerates her condition and limps to feign serious injury.”

“Carefully Orchestrated Scheme”

Calling the incident “a carefully orchestrated scheme,” Lee expressed deep emotional distress in her posts. “I never imagined that someone could act with such deceit simply for the sake of money,” she lamented. She also stated that she had personally witnessed Kaur walking, cooking, and performing normal tasks without difficulty, only to behave differently during medical evaluations.

Jane Lee’s accusations have stirred intense debate in Singapore over workplace injury fraud, employer rights, and the vulnerabilities of small business owners. Her sudden death, coming just 24 hours after these serious claims, has added an eerie dimension to an already complex and emotionally charged case. Authorities have yet to release the official cause of her death, and no foul play has been publicly confirmed.
