After North Korea launched massive balloons filled with trash and garbage into the South Korean territory, Seoul vowed an "unbearable" retaliation on Sunday. This came after North Korea escalated tensions with South Korea by launching hundreds of large balloons to scatter rubbish across the border, simulating nuclear strikes against its southern neighbour, and allegedly jamming GPS navigation signals in South Korea.
South Korea's national security director, Chang Ho-jin, announced on Sunday that during an emergency meeting, top officials decided to implement "unbearable" measures against North Korea in response to its recent series of provocative actions, reported AP.
Calling the alleged GPS signal jamming “absurd and irrational," Chang termed it as "acts of provocation that a normal country can't imagine.” He accused North Korea of aiming to cause “public anxieties and chaos” in South Korea.

South Korea's Retaliation likely
South Korean officials have not specified the retaliatory measures they plan to take. However, many analysts believe South Korea is likely to restart loudspeaker broadcasts along the front lines. These broadcasts criticise North Korea's poor human rights record and include world news and K-pop music. Such broadcasts are highly provocative to North Korea, as the majority of its 26 million citizens lack access to foreign television and radio programs.
Earlier last week, South Korean security forces claimed that North Korea launched over 700 balloons in its territory. Most of the ballons were carrying cigarette butts, scraps of cloth, waste paper and vinyl, but no dangerous substances, they said.
This marked North Korea's second balloon operation in under a week. Between Tuesday and Wednesday, South Korean authorities reported discovering approximately 260 balloons from North Korea filled with trash and manure. No significant damage has been reported in South Korea.
