Syrian rebel factions have appointed Mohammed al-Bashir as the head of their transitional government. Mohammed al-Bashir have been named the interim prime minister of the transitional Syrian government, a position he will hold until March 1, 2025, according to a televised announcement made on Tuesday. Prior to this, al-Bashir led the opposition-led Salvation Government before the swift 12-day offensive reached Damascus.

Days After President Bashar al-Assad was ousted in Syria, the rebels who now rule Damascus nominated Mohammed al-Bashir to lead the transitional government.

According to local reports, the interim government will remain in place until March 1. Assad, who fled to Russia on Sunday and requested asylum in Moscow, ended the Assad family's 50-year control in Syria, as well as his own 24 years as president.

People celebrated in the streets of Damascus after his removal, but chaos also broke out as crowds looted Assad’s palace and saw the extravagant lifestyle he had enjoyed.

With the fall of Damascus on December 8, Syria’s 13-year-long civil war came to an end, marking the fall of the Assad family’s brutal rule that lasted over 50 years.

The Rebel forces began fighting government troops in late November, seizing control of various cities until finally capturing Damascus on Sunday. The rebels were mostly commanded by Hayat al-Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), a group initially linked with al-Qaeda.

Who Is Mohammed al-Bashir? 

Mohammed al-Bashir is a Syrian engineer and politician who started serving as the fifth prime minister of the self-declared HTS administration, the Syrian Salvation Government, in January.

He was born in 1986 in the Jabal Zawiya region of Idlib, according to a resume published by the Salvation Government. He has qualifications in engineering, law, and administrative planning.

Al-Bashir graduated in 2007 from the University of Aleppo with a degree in electrical and electronic engineering, specializing in communications.
