Amid reports of the US freezing foreign aid, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Saturday clarified that the US has not stopped military aid to Ukraine amid reports suggesting that the Trump administration has stopped foreign aid to several countries, including Ukraine and African nations. The report suggested that the step was taken for 90 days to analyse the aids provided to several countries.
The clarification from Zelenskyy came while he was addressing a press conference with Moldovan President Maia Sandu. He stated that he is focused on the military aid by the US and also thanked 'God' that the aid was not stopped. “I am focused on military aid; it has not been stopped, thank God,” Zelenskyy was quoted as saying by an Associated Press at the press conference. However, the Ukrainian president did not specify whether the humanitarian aid from the US was stopped or not.
A report on Friday suggested that the Trump administration has decided to freeze all the foreign aid given to several countries, including Ukraine. The report suggested that the aids will be stopped for all the countries except for Israel and Egypt, two of its close allies in the Middle East region. Donald Trump, in his election campaign speeches, mentioned that the wars were not of the US.
The freezing of military aid would have been a major setback for Ukraine, as it is heavily dependent on the US for its needs. The step from the US would have worsened the situation for Ukraine amid its ongoing deadly war with Russia. According to several reports, Ukraine is dependent on the US for 40 per cent of its military needs.
The US President Donald Trump on several occasions blamed ex-President Joe Biden for the ongoing wars in several regions of the world. He also criticised the former president for providing so much aid to Ukraine and other countries. Earlier on Saturday, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that the war with Ukraine was avoidable if Trump had come back to power in 2020.
