Trump Nobel Peace Prize 2025: The 2025 Nobel Peace Prize went to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado, but the week leading up to the announcement was dominated by US President Donald Trump’s public campaign for the coveted honour. Trump had repeatedly declared that he “deserved” the award, claiming to have “ended eight wars” in less than a year.

Machado, 57, received the prize for her “courageous struggle for democracy and non-violent resistance” in Venezuela. The Nobel Committee praised her decades-long campaign to promote human rights and her work towards a peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.

Trump’s Nobel Push

During several speeches, including one at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Trump said no leader in history had done what he had. “Nobody’s ever done that,” he told military officers. “Will I get the Nobel Prize? Absolutely not. They’ll give it to someone who didn’t do a damn thing.” The conflicts he listed included Israel–Iran, India–Pakistan, Armenia–Azerbaijan, Egypt–Ethiopia, Serbia–Kosovo, Thailand–Cambodia, Rwanda–DRC, and, most recently, Israel–Hamas under his proposed Gaza peace plan. Yet many of these claims remain disputed or unverified.

Trump’s statement that he had “resolved tensions” between India and Pakistan was repeatedly dismissed by New Delhi. Officials clarified that India’s ceasefire with Pakistan was a bilateral decision taken independently.External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said in an interview that there was “no external pressure or mediation” involved. “India’s diplomatic and defence choices are sovereign. The United States had no role in the process,” he said.

Why Oslo Chose Machado Over Trump?

According to sources in Oslo who spoke to Reuters, Trump’s name did appear among the nominations received, but the Norwegian Nobel Committee did not find his record aligned with the core principles of the Peace Prize, sustained peace, international cooperation, and long-term stability.“The Nobel Committee values durable peace efforts, not quick or publicity-driven interventions,” one source familiar with the deliberations said. Trump’s Gaza ceasefire plan, they noted, was announced too late after the committee had already taken its final decision.

Analysts cited by Reuters also pointed to Trump’s earlier decisions to withdraw the US from the World Health Organization and the Paris Climate Agreement, which weakened his case. “Those actions go against the spirit of Nobel’s will,” said Nina Græger, Director of the Peace Research Institute Oslo.

How The Nobel Peace Prize Is Decided?

The Peace Prize, one of five established in Alfred Nobel’s 1895 will, is awarded each year by a five-member Norwegian Nobel Committee appointed by Parliament.

The selection process includes:

Nominations open in September and close on February 1 the following year.

Only specific nominators, including heads of state, lawmakers, university professors, and past laureates, can propose names.

The committee reviews around 300 nominations annually and creates a shortlist by spring.

Months of confidential evaluation follow, based on peace impact, international collaboration, and sustained results.

The laureate is announced in October and honoured in Oslo on December 10, Alfred Nobel’s death anniversary.

Some of Trump’s endorsements, including those from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Pakistan’s Army Chief Gen. Asim Munir, reportedly arrived after the February 1 deadline, making them ineligible for this year’s review.

Though Trump called the decision a “big insult to America,” observers say his future prospects may improve if his Middle East diplomacy produces lasting peace.  Thus, for now, the Nobel Committee’s message is clear peace is measured by endurance, not applause.
