US President-elect Donald Trump has made key cabinet appointments for his upcoming term beginning in January 2025. Trump has picked Pete Hegseth, a Fox News host and Army veteran, as his choice for defence secretary.
“I am honoured to announce that I have nominated Pete Hegseth to serve in my Cabinet as The Secretary of Defense. Pete has spent his entire life as a Warrior for the Troops, and the Country. Pete is tough, smart and a true believer in America First. With Pete at the helm, America's enemies are on notice - Our Military will be Great Again, and America will Never Back Down…” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
With this key appointment, Hegseth will become the second-youngest person to serve as US Defence Secretary after Donald Rumsfeld.

Who Is Pete Hegseth
Pete Hegseth, a prominent Fox News host and Army veteran, has been tapped by President-elect Donald Trump to serve as the next Secretary of Defense. He began co-hosting the network's weekend morning talk program in late 2016, quickly becoming a recognizable voice in the media landscape.
Hegseth has been instrumental in Fox News' expansion into streaming and live events. Since 2019, he has hosted the Fox Nation "Patriot Awards," an annual event that celebrates and honours first responders, military personnel, and law enforcement officers.

He has graduated from Princeton University and holds a graduate degree from Harvard University. During his time in the army, Hegseth served in Guantanamo Bay, Iraq, and Afghanistan. He earned two Bronze Stars and a Combat Infantryman's badge during his stint.
Hegseth has also written several books, many of which were published under the network’s imprint, including The War on Warriors: Behind the Betrayal of the Men Who Keep Us Free. When announcing Hegseth’s nomination, Trump praised the book, highlighting its success with nine weeks on the New York Times best-sellers list, including two weeks at number one. Though Hegseth has military experience, he does not have senior roles in the military or national security.
