A bizarre incident unfolded in Turkey when a 26-year-old man allegedly robbed a jewellery shop using a forklift and then fled the scene riding a donkey. The incident was captured on a CCTV camera, based on which the local police in central Turkiye arrested the man. 

The incident occurred on February 9 in the Ildem Cumhuriyet neighbourhood of Kayseri. Authorities said the masked suspect broke through the shop’s shutters and windows, gained entry, and made off with approximately 150 grams of gold.

According to a report by local media outlet Turkiye Today, the man, identified as MC, was detained shortly after the police traced the accused through CCTV footage. The person was later produced in front of a court, and he has been put under custody. The police have also recovered a large cache of items in possession of the person, including rings, necklaces and earrings. All the stolen items have been returned to the shop owner.

What Did The Police Interrogation Revealed?

Police questioned the accused, who confessed that he had left his home late at night, intending to travel towards Mersin. He rode his donkey to the Ildem area and told investigators he was intoxicated at the time, claiming he had been looking for more alcohol after running out.

During his journey, he spotted a parked forklift with exposed wiring. By connecting the wires, he managed to start the vehicle. He then drove around before stopping outside a jewellery shop, where he began reflecting on his financial difficulties. Using the forklift, he forced open the shutters, entered the unlit store, and removed gold items from a display case before leaving the scene on foot.

In his statement, he said he later returned to a nearby stream, mounted his donkey again, and rode back to a family-owned barn. There, he concealed the stolen jewellery in a bag, hiding it beneath a mud brick near the entrance to the hay storage area.

The case has attracted attention because of the unusual way in which the man escaped from the scene.
