Several UK cities witnessed severe turmoil as right-wing demonstrators became violent and launched assaults on riot police on Saturday. Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed his “full support” for the police to take action against “extremists” trying to “spread hate” through intimidation as he convened emergency discussions with ministers regarding the unrest in various parts of England on Saturday.
Home Secretary Yvette Cooper also announced that those involved in violent disturbances “will face consequences” and emphasized that “criminal violence and disorder have no place on Britain’s streets.”
The unrest has expanded to various cities, including Liverpool, Manchester, Sunderland, Hull, Belfast, and Leeds, with confrontations between protesters and police escalating throughout the day. In Liverpool, the crowd hurled bricks, bottles, and flares at the officers, resulting in injuries to security personnel and damage to police vehicles.
The unrest persisted with reports of a chair being thrown at an officer and considerable pushing and shoving among protesters. Merseyside Police reported that several officers were injured during the serious disorder in Liverpool city centre, with one officer being struck on the head by a chair.
British transport police also issued a warning to the public after razor blades were discovered concealed under far-right extremist stickers at a train station near Dunton Green, Kent.
Why Are Riots Spreading Across UK?
The series of violent incidents began in Southport on Tuesday, where protestors attacked police and set cars on fire the day after three girls were killed in a knife attack at a Taylor Swift-themed holiday club.
Axel Muganwa Rudakubana, a 17-year-old from Lancashire, is alleged to be the attacker, but misinformation circulated online falsely claimed the suspect was an asylum seeker and a Muslim.
