In a major escalation of its long-range capabilities, Ukraine has reportedly launched a devastating drone offensive deep inside Russian territory, destroying over 40 military aircraft at four separate airbases, including strategic nuclear bombers. The operation, described by Ukrainian officials as a “special operation” conducted by the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), is being hailed as one of the most ambitious strikes on Russian military infrastructure to date.
According to reports from Ukrainian media and confirmed by officials cited in Reuters and AFP, the multi-pronged attack targeted airfields in Olenya, Belaya, and two other undisclosed locations across Russia. The Kyiv Independent quoted an SBU source as saying, “Enemy strategic bombers are burning en masse in Russia, this is the result of a special operation by the SBU.”
Four Airbases Targeted Across Russia
The operation reportedly took more than 18 months to plan and was executed with precision. Among the destroyed aircraft are Tu-95 and Tu-22M3 long-range bombers and at least one A-50 airborne early warning aircraft. These bombers are part of Russia’s strategic air fleet and are capable of carrying nuclear weapons.
The Belaya airbase in Irkutsk oblast, Siberia, more than 2,900 miles from Ukraine, was one of the primary targets. Footage circulating online purports to show fires and explosions at the base, although Russia’s Ministry of Defence has not issued an official statement. The governor of Irkutsk confirmed that Ukrainian remote-piloted aircraft had attacked a military unit in the village of Sridni, marking the first known drone strike on Siberian soil.
Strike rom Inside Russia?
What makes this attack particularly notable is the method of execution. According to RBC-Ukraine, the drones were launched from within Russia, allegedly from trucks disguised as civilian vehicles parked near the targeted bases. Images released by Ukrainian sources show rows of FPV drones stored inside large cargo trucks, suggesting a sophisticated and covert operation.
Ukrainian media sources claim the operation inflicted over USD 2 billion worth of damage on Russia’s air force. Olenya airbase, which houses Russia’s Tu-95 bombers capable of launching long-range cruise missiles, was among the hardest hit. The Russian military has remained silent on the scale of the reported destruction.
