Days after Iran launched approximately 180 missiles at Israel, the US announced new sanctions aimed at Iran's petroleum and petrochemical sectors in response to its attack on Israel. Additionally, the US is sanctioning 16 entities involved in the Iranian petroleum trade and blocking 23 vessels.

In a post on X, US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller announced comprehensive new sanctions on Iran's petroleum and petrochemical sectors to restrict the resources available to the Iranian regime for funding destabilising activities.

Friday's sanctions include restrictions on Iran's so-called "ghost fleet" of ships and related companies operating in the United Arab Emirates, Liberia, Hong Kong, and other locations that are said to obscure and transport Iranian oil for sale to buyers in Asia, according to a report by News18.

The US State Department identified a network of companies located in Suriname, India, Malaysia, and Hong Kong for allegedly facilitating the sale and transportation of petroleum and petroleum products from Iran.

Tehran on October 1 launched a barrage of missiles at Israel in response to the killing of Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, as well as the assassinations of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and an Iranian general in Beirut.

“To that end, we are taking steps today to disrupt the flow of revenue the Iranian regime uses to fund its nuclear program and missile development, support terrorist proxies and partners, and perpetuate conflict throughout the Middle East,” said Miller.
