Canada has heightened vigil at US borders in anticipation of a potential surge in the influx of migrants after Republican leader Donald Trump registered a resounding victory in the US presidential election. Notably, Trump held a fervid campaign and adopted a strong stance against the migrants, promising the biggest mass deportation in American history. Trump accused immigrants of "poisoning the blood of the country."

"We're on high alert. All of our eyes are looking at the border to see what's going to happen... because we know that Trump's stance on immigration might drive up illegal and irregular migration to Canada," news agency AFP quoted a Royal Canadian Mounted Police spokesman, Sergeant Charles Poirier, as saying.

"The worst-case scenario would be people crossing large numbers everywhere on the territory. Let's say we had 100 people per day entering across the border, then it's going to be hard because our officers will basically have to cover huge distances in order to arrest everyone," he added.

On Friday, Canada’s Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland met several ministers to discuss issues that may serve as a bone of contention between Canada and the US after a change in the regime. She said they were ready to get rid of the migrant problem as well.

“We have a plan. Canadians need to know... our borders are safe and secure and we control them,” she said without divulging much about the meeting.

In Trump’s first term, thousands of migrants were stripped of US protection and fled to Canada. Now, when Trump is set to become the US President again, there may be another exodus of migrants. Google searches on moving to Canada from the US have seen a meteoric rise over the past few days.
