At least six people were killed in a series of related shootings across three locations in eastern Mississippi, authorities said on Saturday, confirming that a suspect has been taken into custody and there is no further threat to the public.
According to Clay County Sheriff Eddie Scott, the violence unfolded in the town of West Point, situated near the Alabama border. In a statement shared on Facebook, the sheriff said “multiple innocent lives” were lost due to what he described as a tragic act of violence.
Shootings Across Multiple Locations
Speaking to local broadcaster WTVA, Sheriff Scott confirmed that the six fatalities occurred at three separate locations within West Point. Law enforcement agencies responded to the scenes late Friday night following reports of gunfire, launching an extensive operation to secure the area and identify the suspect.
Officials have not disclosed the exact locations of the shootings or the identities of the victims, pending notification of families. Authorities confirmed that a suspect was apprehended and is currently in custody. Sheriff Scott stressed that the individual no longer poses a threat to residents. “We do have the individual in custody, and there is no longer a danger to our community,” the sheriff said, adding that the investigation is ongoing.
In his Facebook post, Scott appealed to the public for patience as law enforcement continues its work. “I ask that you lift our victims and their families in your prayers. Law enforcement is busy investigating and will release an update as soon as possible,” he wrote.
Investigation Underway, Motive Unknown
As of now, officials had not released details regarding a possible motive behind the shootings or whether the victims were targeted at random. The sheriff’s office said investigators are working to piece together the sequence of events that led to the deadly rampage.
