Apple users may be in for a payout, related to a USD 95 million class-action settlement involving the tech giant’s Siri voice assistant. While Apple denies any wrongdoing, the company agreed to settle a lawsuit that accused it of recording users' private conversations without consent.
The controversy stems from a 2021 class-action lawsuit filed over Siri’s behaviour on Apple devices. Plaintiffs claimed that Siri would often activate without a user's intent and record sensitive or private conversations. In the 2019 case Lopez v. Apple Inc., it was revealed that Apple allegedly shared these recordings with third parties, who used the data for personalised advertising. Apple hasn’t admitted fault, but the company decided to settle earlier this year, leading to a multi-million-dollar compensation pool for affected users.
Who Is Eligible?
If you owned a Siri-enabled Apple device between September 17, 2014, and December 31, 2024, and experienced unintended Siri activations during confidential conversations, you may qualify for compensation.
Eligible devices for the settlement include the iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, MacBook, iMac, HomePod, Apple TV, and iPod Touch. Millions of consumers who used any of these Siri-enabled devices between September 17, 2014, and December 31, 2024, may qualify to file a claim. If you owned one or more of these devices during that period and experienced unintended Siri activation during a private or confidential conversation, you could be eligible for a portion of the settlement.
How Much Could You Receive?
According to the settlement details, each user could receive up to USD 20 per qualifying device. The actual payment could vary depending on how many claims are filed. More claimants mean smaller individual payments, while fewer could result in higher compensation.
How To File Claim
Consumers who received a notice, either by email or postcard, with a claim identification number or confirmation code can use that information to file their claim through the official settlement website. If you did not receive a code, you may still be eligible to submit a claim. In such cases, you will need to provide your full name, address, email, and phone number. Go to the "Submit Claim" section on the settlement website and follow the instructions provided to complete the process.
