Amid the search operation, the investigators have recovered the black boxes from a passenger plane whose mid-air collision with an Army Black Hawk helicopter over the Potomac River has killed 67 passengers. The plane collided with the helicopter as it prepared to land at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. The authorities stated that it was not clear why the disaster happened.
It was later confirmed that no one among the passengers survived the crash. Though the names of the victims were not released, it included promising prominent young figure skaters and people from Kansas, reported Reuters. Senator Maria Cantwell said that several foreign citizens also died in the crash.
It included citizens from Russia, China, the Philippines, and Germany. The National Transportation Safety Board said that investigators recovered the voice recorder and flight data recorder from the Bombardier CRJ700 passenger jet. The authorities stated that a preliminary report about the incident is expected within 30 days.
A massive controversy erupted after US President Donald Trump accused his predecessor Joe Biden of such accidents, adding that he lowered hiring standards and suggested the Federal Aviation Administration's diversity push could have weakened its capabilities. "They actually came out with a directive: 'too white.' And we want the people that are competent," Trump had stated.
However, his administration has not provided any proof to justify his statement, and it contradicts the statement from authorities that confirmed that the specific reason behind the crash was not known yet. Several of the Democrats criticized the US president for not being sensitive enough and politicising the deaths of the passengers.
"The President has made his decision to put politics over people abundantly clear as he uses the highest office in the land to sow hatred rooted in falsehoods instead of providing us with the leadership we need and deserve,” Derrick Johnson, president of the NAACP civil rights group, was quoted as saying by Reuters.
