Amid a surge of speculation over the wellbeing of former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan, authorities at Adiala Jail on Wednesday firmly dismissed rumours that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief had died in custody or been secretly transferred. The prison administration called the circulating reports “baseless,” confirming that Khan remains inside the high-security facility and is in “good health,” according to Geo News.
In an official statement, Adiala Jail clarified that there is “no truth to reports about his transfer” and assured that Imran Khan is receiving “complete medical attention.” The response came after sensational claims, including those from Afghan media outlets, surfaced that Khan had died in jail. The reports triggered widespread alarm, including protests outside the Rawalpindi prison and renewed demands for proof of life.
Khan was arrested more than two years ago and has been accused of several corruption, terrorism, and political cases. Despite his continuing litigation in court, the authorities are of the view that Khan's condition is stable and he has not been shifted out of Adiala.
Family And Supporters Protest Outside Jail
Outside the jail, tensions rose as Khan's sisters, Noreen Khan, Aleema Khan, and Uzma Khan, were again denied permission to meet him. Flanked by PTI workers and supporters, they took to protesting at Factory Naka near Adiala Jail in protest against denial of access and seeking clarity on his condition.
Amidst the protests, news started trickling in that Imran Khan had been put in solitary confinement, further jeopardizing his well-being. The protests, which began as a sit-in, were finally broken up at the request of Allama Raja Nasir, head of Majlis Wahdat-i-Muslimeen (MWM).
Aleema Khan told Dawn, “Who knows, maybe Imran has been shifted. Why are they not letting us meet him?” The sisters also accused police of “brutal and orchestrated” violence during previous protests.
Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif asserted that the former prime minister is living more comfortably than most inmates. Speaking to reporters, Asif claimed Khan enjoys facilities including a double bed, a velvet mattress, television access, exercise equipment, and even meals comparable to a “five-star hotel.”
