In a major breakthrough for Indian law enforcement, two of the country’s most-wanted gangsters, Venkatesh Garg and Bhanu (Bhau) Rana, have been arrested in the United States. Officials from multiple security agencies, including the Haryana Police, confirmed the arrests, calling them a “significant success.” Both men are expected to be deported to India soon.
Security sources cited by NDTV estimate that over two dozen prominent Indian gangsters currently operate from foreign safe havens, orchestrating extortion, smuggling, contract killings, and intimidation through local operatives back home. The arrests of Garg and Rana are expected to disrupt major criminal networks active across northern India.
Who is Venkatesh Garg?
Venkatesh Garg, a native of Narayangarh in Haryana, has more than 10 criminal cases registered against him in India. He fled to Georgia after being implicated in the murder of a Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader in Gurugram. Since then, he continued to expand his criminal syndicate from abroad.
According to investigators, Garg was actively recruiting young men from Haryana, Rajasthan, Delhi, and other northern states into organised crime. His syndicate focused on extortion, intimidation, and targeted violence.

Garg is also known to have worked closely with Kapil Sangwan, another established gangster based overseas, helping manage extortion operations in the National Capital Region (NCR). Police officials say his network’s reach continues to grow due to digital communication tools and international financing channels.
Who is Bhanu (Bhau) Rana?
Bhanu Rana, originally from Karnal in Haryana, was detained in the United States. He is reportedly a close associate of the infamous Lawrence Bishnoi gang, linked to several high-profile attacks, contract killings, and extortion rackets across northern India.
Rana has a long record of criminal activity, with multiple police cases registered against him. His name surfaced earlier during the investigation of a grenade attack in Punjab, highlighting his suspected involvement in violent extremism. Agencies have also discovered that several of his US-based associates remain connected to ongoing rackets in India.
Multiple aides tied to Rana have already been arrested domestically, with several charge sheets filed in cases relating to extortion, assault, and conspiracy.
