A new wave of uncertainty has hit H-1B and H-4 visa applicants, as many have been issued 221(g) slips at US consulates following the introduction of enhanced social media vetting. The move has left applicants, particularly from India, scrambling to understand what the slip means and why their interviews are being delayed.
A Reddit user detailed his experience at the US consulate in Chennai, describing how he and a select group of applicants seemed to be part of a pilot program for the new vetting process. “While standing there, it hit me … We are probably the select few, guinea pigs, piloting the new vetting process. Unfortunately, that theory held up,” he wrote. The user, who had applied for an H-1B visa renewal, said he reached the consulate at 8:30 am, completing his interview by around 9 am.
Social Media Questions At Counter
According to the Reddit post, the new process includes detailed questions about applicants’ social media presence. A woman ahead of him was first asked routine questions about her job before the officer probed whether all her social media accounts were set to public. She was then issued a white 221(g) slip, with the officer explaining that additional time was needed to review the application.
The Reddit user faced similar questions, starting with employment verification before being asked about his social media profiles and news consumption habits. These questions highlight a growing trend in US consular procedures to vet applicants’ online activity before finalising visa approvals.

Understanding The 221(g) Slip
A 221(g) slip is issued under Section 221(g) of the US Immigration and Nationality Act, indicating that a visa cannot be approved immediately. Importantly, it does not signify a denial, but signals that additional documents, clarification, or administrative processing is required.
The slip comes in various colours, but the recent surge in white slips indicates pending social media vetting. Immigration experts note that the colour does not determine the outcome; applicants should follow the written instructions carefully.
Impact On Indian H-1B Applicants
The social media vetting process has led to a sudden deferral of visa appointments, disproportionately affecting Indian H-1B holders. Many applicants who travelled to India for visa stamping were surprised to find appointments postponed to April or May next year. Those unable to enter the US without a new stamping now face uncertainty over employment and travel plans.
