A shocking trend has emerged in China, where people are hanging themselves by the neck to try and reduce pain. The trend has gone viral with many people, including elderly individuals trying this “neck-hanging exercise” by using ropes tied to trees. They are also lifting their feet off the ground and swinging while doing this trend.

Why People Are Hanging Themselves From Trees?

According to the South China Morning Post (SCMP), people doing this trend are inspired by cervical traction therapy used in hospitals. They believe it can help treat cervical spondylosis and reduce neck pain. However, doctors warn that this is not how medical traction works, and the method used by people is unsafe. According to them, hanging the full body weight from the neck can cause serious injuries like spinal damage, fractures, paralysis, or even death.

Earlier in 2024, a 57-year-old man in Chongqing had died while attempting this method. Therefore, experts strictly warn against trying this trend to get relief from neck pain.

What Is Cervical Traction Therapy?

This therapy is considered a short-term treatment for neck pain and involves gently pulling the head away from the neck to create space between the vertebrae and reduce nerve compression. In hospitals, the treatment is carefully controlled, with doctors using only a small amount of body weight.

Netizens React To Viral Trend

As the trend has gained online attention, netizens have expressed concern about this viral “neck hanging exercise.” A user wrote on X, “In Shenyang, China, some residents are trying an unusual insomnia remedy: hanging from the neck with a belt and gently swinging for minutes. Supporters claim better sleep. Experts strongly warn this is dangerous and not medically recommended.” Another user said, “It is honestly terrifying. My blood freezes just watching it.”

A third user added, “China's viral 'neck-hanging' trend in Shenyang parks: Seniors use padded belts to gently swing from poles, claiming it decompresses the spine and cures insomnia linked to cervical spondylosis. Popularized by 57yo Sun Rongchun (who patented a device after fixing his own symptoms), many swear by faster sleep and less pain — but doctors warn it's risky (potential spinal/nerve damage or worse). Fascinating folk remedy or dangerous DIY traction.”
