Vivek Ramaswamy, the 39-year-old Indian-origin entrepreneur, made headlines when he unexpectedly resigned from his role in the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) following Donald Trump’s inauguration as the 47th President of the United States. Ramaswamy, who had a brief and unsuccessful bid in the Republican presidential race, has now shifted focus to his political ambitions in Ohio.
Just hours after Trump took office, Ramaswamy announced that he would no longer be part of the government efficiency advisory group that Trump had appointed him to lead, alongside tech billionaire Elon Musk. The White House confirmed his departure, and Ramaswamy shared his thoughts in a post on social media platform X.
"It was an honor to help support the creation of DOGE. I’m confident that Elon and his team will succeed in improving government efficiency. I’ll be sharing more soon about my plans for Ohio. Most importantly, we’re all-in to help President Trump make America great again," Ramaswamy stated.

Ramaswamy, who had become close to both Trump and Vice President JD Vance, was selected in November of the previous year to co-lead DOGE with Musk. However, his future political aspirations have led him to step away from the advisory group.
A spokesperson for the government efficiency group, Anna Kelly, praised Ramaswamy for his instrumental role in the creation of DOGE and confirmed that his decision to leave was driven by his intent to run for office in Ohio. "Vivek intends to seek elected office soon, which requires him to step back from DOGE, in line with the group’s structure. We thank him for his contributions and look forward to his continued involvement in our mission to make America great again," Kelly said in a statement.
Born to Indian parents in Cincinnati, Ramaswamy is a Harvard and Yale Law graduate. He made his fortune by blending hedge fund strategies with pharmaceutical research. Now, Ramaswamy is reportedly preparing to announce his candidacy for Ohio governor, with the election slated for November 2026. This move follows reports from The Washington Post, which cited an Ohio-based political operative familiar with Ramaswamy’s plans.

"Vivek’s plan has always been clear: achieve success at DOGE and then launch his gubernatorial campaign. The announcement is already drafted and ready to go," the anonymous source told The Washington Post. Ramaswamy would aim to replace current Governor Mike DeWine, who is term-limited and cannot seek re-election.
As Ramaswamy shifts his focus to Ohio politics, his departure from DOGE marks a significant move in his broader political strategy, with many now waiting to see what his next steps will be in the race for governor.
