Mandelson-Epstein Row: The UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer is at the centre of a growing political crisis after the controversial appointment of Peter Mandelson as the United Kingdom’s Ambassador to the United States sparked anger within the Labour Party and across the political spectrum. The scandal has not only led to a wave of public backlash but has also raised serious questions about Starmer’s judgement and leadership.
The controversy centres around the revelation that Starmer was aware of Mandelson’s past ties to Jeffrey Epstein, even after the financier's conviction for child sex offences. This has put Starmer under increasing pressure as he faces calls for his resignation and fierce criticism from within his own party.
Mandelson-Epstein Row: Starmer's Apology
In the wake of the scandal, Starmer issued a public apology to the victims of Epstein’s abuse. He admitted to being “lied to” during the vetting process of Mandelson’s appointment as ambassador. The apology came as opposition leaders and some Labour MPs demanded an explanation for how the Prime Minister failed to address Mandelson’s past connections with Epstein.
Addressing the victims, Starmer said, “I'm sorry. Sorry for what was done to you, sorry that so many people with power failed you, sorry for having believed Mandelson's lies and appointing him.”
Starmer also acknowledged the extent of the relationship between Mandelson and Epstein, saying: “It had been publicly known for some time that Mandelson knew Epstein, but none of us knew the depth and the darkness of that relationship.”
Political Fallout For UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer
The scandal began after emails released by the US Justice Department revealed that Mandelson had maintained a close relationship with Epstein even after the latter’s conviction for sex offences involving a minor.
In 2009, Mandelson reportedly sent Epstein a government memo about potential UK asset sales and tax changes, and in 2010, he allegedly informed Epstein about a European Union bailout plan during the height of the EU debt crisis. These revelations raised questions about Mandelson's integrity and his position within the government.
Starmer, while defending his actions, stated that Mandelson had misrepresented the true nature of his relationship with Epstein. He expressed his anger over being deceived by his former colleague, "I was lied to, lied to; deceit," Starmer said. "I understand the anger and frustration among Labour MPs [members of parliament] about what has happened... I actually share that anger and frustration, it was palpable yesterday. I'm not surprised."
As a result, Mandelson was dismissed from his position as Ambassador to the United States in September 2025.
New Revelations Against Mandelson & Ongoing Investigations
Further revelations from the US Department of Justice have added fuel to the ongoing political storm, with documents suggesting that Mandelson shared sensitive government information with Epstein after the 2008 global financial crisis. Furthermore, records show that Epstein made payments totalling USD 75,000 to accounts linked to Mandelson and his husband, Reinaldo Avila da Silva, between 2003 and 2004.
British police have launched an investigation into Mandelson for potential misconduct in public office. While he has not been accused of any sexual offences, Mandelson’s actions have raised concerns about his integrity and his influence within government circles.
The scandal has sent shockwaves through British politics. Senior figures across the political spectrum, including several MPs within Starmer’s own Labour Party, have questioned the Prime Minister’s judgement and leadership. Some have even gone as far as to say that “it’s over” for Starmer.
On February 4, in the House of Commons, Starmer confirmed that the vetting process in 2024 had revealed the continued friendship between Mandelson and Epstein, despite Epstein's 2008 conviction. The admission sent shockwaves through the chamber, and Starmer later clarified that he had meant only that “it had been known publicly for some time that they knew each other.”
As the pressure mounts, the UK government plans to release files from the vetting process in the hope of exonerating Starmer and proving that Mandelson lied. However, not all documents will be made public due to the ongoing police investigation, and some will be reviewed by Parliament's independent Intelligence and Security Committee for potential national security concerns.
Although, Keir Starmer never met Jeffrey Epstein, the British prime minister's job is under threat due to the fallout from the late sex offender's global network of relationships.
Epstein's connections have already caused the downfall of a British royal Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, formerly known as Prince Andrew as well as that of UK Ambassador to Washington, Peter Mandelson, who was dismissed by Starmer over his association with the financier.

The fallout from the scandal has raised doubts about Starmer’s ability to continue leading within Labour Party, with senior figures appearing to position themselves as potential successors.
It only takes one candidate to secure 20 per cent of MPs’ support to stand against him, and the prime minister is in serious trouble. Given the current political climate, many believe that Starmer’s position could be in jeopardy.
Who Could Replace Prime Minister Starmer?
1. Angela Rayner - Former Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner has emerged as one of the frontrunners, despite her resignation less than six months ago over issues surrounding her personal tax payments. Rayner raised eyebrows on Wednesday when she made it clear that she would vote against the release of the full vetting documents relating to Mandelson’s appointment.
2. Andy Burnham - Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham has been speculated as a potential challenger to Starmer’s leadership for some time. The speculation has grown particularly since mid-2025, and Burnham is viewed by many as a strong contender for the role of Prime Minister.
3. Shabana Mahmood - Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood is another potential candidate to take over the Labour leadership. Mahmood has been effectively endorsed by former Prime Minister Tony Blair, and she has gained support as a strong and capable figure within the party.
