In a landmark moment for reproductive medicine, a baby has been given birth to from a 30-year-old frozen embryo, a baby has been born from a 30-year-old frozen embryo, making it the oldest known embryo in the world to result in a successful live birth. Baby Thaddeus Daniel Pierce was born July 26, 2025, in Ohio to Lindsey and Tim Pierce, making history with a major advance in in vitro fertilization (IVF) and embryo cryopreservation.
30-Year-Old Embryo Brings New Hope In Fertility Science
The embryo, which was produced in 1994, was initially frozen and preserved after a single use by Linda Archerd, who gave birth to a daughter in the same year. The rest of the embryos were kept in liquid nitrogen and left untouched for more than three decades. In 2023, Archerd, who is now 62, chose to donate the unused embryos through Nightlight Christian Adoptions, a faith-based embryo adoption agency that operates the "Snowflakes" program. The program allows donors of embryos to select adoptive families, frequently based on mutual religious and ethical beliefs. The Pierces, a devout Christian couple from Ohio, were matched with the embryo after struggling with infertility for nearly 10 years. One embryo was successfully implanted, resulting in the birth of Thaddeus. "This case amply illustrates that the age of an embryo does not have a major impact on its capacity to lead to a healthy infant, provided cryopreservation technology is employed with modern techniques," said Dr. John Gordon, a reproductive endocrinologist who carried out the embryo transfer. Gordon, who runs a fertility clinic that is based on religious principles, also said, "We believe every embryo should have an opportunity for life. This result reconfirms the long-term potential of embryo storage."
Unlike conventional adoption, embryo adoption enables the birth mother to carry and deliver a child who is not genetically her own. It is being seen more as a powerful option for families with infertility issues. The Pierces reported that they were spiritually inspired by the chance to adopt an embryo, even if it was older. "We didn't do this to set records," Lindsey Pierce told the MIT Technology Review, which first reported the story.. "We just wanted a baby, and now we have Thaddeus—our miracle," she added. Archerd, who was the donor of the embryos, felt tearful upon seeing pictures of baby Thaddeus. "He looks exactly like my daughter did when she was a baby. They're obviously siblings."

The arrival has rekindled ethical debates on embryo storage, adoption policy, and the long-term viability of embryos. With hundreds of thousands of frozen embryos in storage all over the world, specialists are calling for sharper regulations and greater public awareness. "Too many embryos are frozen indefinitely because people are undecided," a bioethicist at the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) said. "This case might inspire more donors to see embryo adoption as a significant option."
IVF On The Increase Globally: A New Map
According to the Guardian report use of assisted reproductive technologies (ART) is gradually rising worldwide. In the US, almost 2 per cent of all births are IVF births, while in the UK, IVF births have increased from 1.3 per cent in 2000 to 3.1 per cent in 2023, as stated by the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA). In women aged 40–44 in the UK, 11 per cent of births now follow IVF treatment, a huge increase from only 4 per cent in 2000.
Thaddeus's birth is more than a medical milestone; it's a beacon of hope for infertility sufferers around the world. It also challenges what is possible through fertility treatment and provokes significant questions over the future of embryo preservation and adoption.
