A light-hearted street interview in Brooklyn has unexpectedly turned into a cultural viral moment starring New York’s newly elected mayor, Zohran Mamdani. The clip, recorded by content creator Nicolas Nuvan, shows Mamdani stepping out of a black SUV for a quick chat. When Nuvan casually asks whether he has eaten, the 34-year-old Democrat replies, “I did eat today.” What happened next has amused viewers across India and the diaspora. 

Moments later, Mamdani pulls out a packet of Rajnigandha Silver Pearls, saffron-blended cardamom mouth fresheners deeply loved in India and synonymous with desi nostalgia. Offering them like mint candy, Mamdani says, “I’ve also started having a lot of these… It’s like a mint.” Curious, Nuvan accepts a few, remarking, “Oh wow, that’s delicious… it feels like I’m consuming perfume.” Mamdani laughs and delivers the perfect punchline: “Perfumes you can eat.”

The clip spread rapidly across social media, with many joking that Mamdani had now achieved “Real Indian” status.

Bollywood Beats At Victory Celebration

This comes shortly after another viral moment during Mamdani’s celebrations, when iconic Bollywood track “DhoomMachale” blasted through the speakers as he descended from the stage alongside his Rama Duwaji and filmmaker-mother Mira Nair. The festive beat showcased the joyful merging of cultural heritage with political accomplishment. 

Mamdani’s win in the fiercely fought New York City mayoral election has made headlines across the United States. At 34, he becomes the city’s youngest mayor in over fifty years, riding to victory on a message of hope amid what he called “a time of darkness.”

Direct Challenge To Donald Trump

During his fiery victory speech, Mamdani addressed US President Donald Trump directly, responding to threats of cutting federal funding. “Donald Trump, since I know you’re watching, I have four words for you: turn the volume up,” he declared. “To get to any of us, you will have to get through all of us.”
