The Ladakh government introduced 19 electric buses in 2022 to mitigate carbon emissions in an environmentally sensitive area with limited public transportation options. These e-buses have now marked a year since their launch and have successfully curbed over 25 lakh kilograms of carbon emissions in the past one year. These electric buses have travelled more than 10 lakh kilometres, accommodating an average of 1,500 passengers daily.
These electric buses have been manufactured by PMI Electro Mobility Solutions and are operated by the transport department that connect Leh and Kargil, two important cities in the Union Territory. These electric buses are fitted with a 204 KwH Advanced Lithium-ion battery pack while delivering a range of up to 180 kilometres on a single charge and also support fast charging, allowing it to charge fully within an hour. These e-buses boast a seating capacity of maximum 30 passengers and are approximately priced around Rs 1.20 crore.
Additionally, they are also equipped with some top-notch features such as heating, ventilation and air-conditioning to enhance the comfortability of passengers. Safety features in these PMI manufactured buses include 360 degree cameras, Advanced Driver Assistant System (ADAS), Al-based monitoring, Advanced rear-view cameras and advanced SOS features. The buses are also equipped with built-in cameras that monitor all passengers and also feature an Intelligent Transportation Management System and access to Google Maps for navigation, as well as automated passenger counting, among other functionalities.
