The Indian government is gearing up to introduce stricter rules to tackle vehicle pollution effectively. They are planning to roll out Bharat Stage (BS)-7 and Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency (CAFE)-III standards, which align with Euro-7 standards, to boost fuel efficiency and cut down on emissions.

The BS norms in India are similar to the Euro emission standards used in Europe. The European Commission is proposing Euro-7 standards for cars by July 2025 and for buses and lorries by 2027. India adopting these standards is crucial not only for reducing emissions but also for exporting vehicles made under the 'Make in India' initiative to European countries. Implementing these new standards requires collaboration with stakeholders, especially oil companies for improving fuel quality, and the auto industry, which may need significant investments.
According to a report by ET Auto, the Ministry of Road Transport is in talks with stakeholders to outline the details of BS7 emission norms, aligning them with evolving Euro-7 standards. CAFE norms regulate carmakers' fleet emissions to cut down carbon dioxide emissions and enhance fuel efficiency. The move towards stricter emission and CAFE norms is expected to push the adoption of electric vehicles in India. Since the road transport sector contributes greatly to CO2 emissions and urban air pollution, these measures are crucial for reducing environmental impacts.

While these norms mark progress in addressing vehicle pollution, they also pose challenges for the automotive industry and oil companies. Balancing environmental concerns with industry feasibility is a key consideration for policymakers as they move towards a more sustainable transportation system. These changes could lead to discontinuing more diesel-powered vehicles and significant price increases across all vehicles upgrading to the new emission standards, indicating substantial shifts in the Indian automotive industry.
