Advanced Driver Assistance Systems or ADAS are becoming a common sighting in modern day cars. Various automobile manufacturers in India offer ADAS functionality in cars like Hyundai, MG, Mahindra, Tata and many more. ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) comprises high technological systems that help you drive safely. It assists drivers by using components like sensors and cameras in spotting obstacles or if you make a mistake while driving. It then automatically takes action to keep you and others on the road safe, without requiring any human interference. It is rumoured that the Indian government is planning to make the inclusion of ADAS mandatory in all upcoming cars.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has put forward a proposal to put a 'Moving Off Information System' (MOIS) in place for certain types of vehicles. The Ministry aims to make safety features like 'blind spot monitoring' a must-have for all kinds of vehicles, be it for personal use or commercial purposes. In addition to that, the MoRTH is also suggesting to have collision warning systems included in cars as a standard feature. The main goal here is to reduce chances of accidents between vehicles and vulnerable road users like pedestrians and cyclists. These measures are being considered to reduce chances of accidents and avoid collisions between vehicles and vulnerable road users like pedestrians and cyclists and keep everyone on the road safe.
The inclusion of the ADAS suite has become quite popular in India currently as many carmakers are incorporating this feature in their top-level models. If the new proposal becomes a rule, we might see Level 1 ADAS becoming a standard feature in all cars in India. However, this will also result in the prices of the vehicles in India going up a bit. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari is looking at the bigger picture here with the main objective of reducing the number of accidents and deaths caused due to road accidents by half by 2024.

This push for safer roads is coming after a 12% increase in road accidents in India. In 2022, there were over 4.6 lakh accidents and unfortunately 19 people lost their lives every hour due to road accidents. Government stats show that a big majority of these accidents happen because of circumstances like getting hit from behind, hit and run incidents and head-on collisions. Among these, accidents related to blind spots or getting hit from behind are the most common. So, incorporating ADAS in cars as standard will help in avoiding such fatalities.
