Honda is gearing up to introduce a new EV sedan aimed at competing with the Tesla Model 3 and BYD Seal. This sedan is part of Honda's ambitious plan to launch seven new EV models by 2030. According to an Autocar report, this will be a part of Honda’s 0 Series lineup focussing on reducing weight and enhancing aerodynamic performance.

To achieve these goals, Honda will minimise the number of parts used in each model and utilise lightweight aluminium chassis structures. These chassis will be die-casted, a technique popularised by the Tesla Model Y, which helps to reduce part complexity, weight and costs.

Honda has highlighted the advancements made possible by its hybrid models, in reducing the weight of its next-generation electric powertrains. These 'e-axles' will combine a motor, battery, and gearbox into a single unit and will result in saving approximately 100 kg compared to Honda's current EVs. The new EVs will have heavy components, such as the power unit and battery, mounted low and centrally, indicating a skateboard platform design. This platform will have a thinner floor, saving weight and providing a sportier driving position. Each 0 Series model will aim for a range of over 480 km on the US EPA test cycle, which better reflects real-world conditions compared to the European WLTP standard.

Honda CEO, Toshihiro Mibe suggested that different battery chemistries will be crucial. Instead of reducing battery size, the focus will be on battery technology advancements. To cut costs further, Honda plans to produce batteries in-house, with a joint venture battery factory with Korea's LG set to begin production in the US by 2025. Furthermore, Honda aims to cut overall production costs by 35 per cent by 2030. Domestically, the brand is working on its ACE (Asian Compact Electric) EV project, which will include models like the made-in-India Elevate-based e-SUV for both local and export markets.
