Hyundai Exter Rival: Kia May Introduce 'Syros' SUV In India, Registers Trademark For Name; What We Know

South Korean automaker Kia, has recently trademarked the name ‘Syros’ in India, hinting at a new vehicle in the pipeline for the Indian market. This could potentially be a micro SUV aimed at competing with models like Hyundai Exter and Tata Punch or the automaker might introduce an entirely new product altogether. Recently, a prototype of a compact SUV from Kia has been spotted undergoing testing in India. The test mule is heavily camouflaged, indicating that it's still in the early stages of development.

Kia Syros SUV - Design 

In terms of design, the new Kia SUV appears boxy with simple styling elements, with an upright posture to enhance its SUV appeal. At the front, the SUV features slim LED daytime running lights (DRLs) positioned on the bumper, a clamshell bonnet and a grille design inspired by larger Kia SUVs sold globally. The side profile showcases quirky alloy wheel designs with square-shaped elements, door-mounted ORVMs and black cladding along the lower body for a rugged appearance. A unique kink is noticed on the B-pillar, while the roof sports functional high rails. Moving to the rear, vertically stacked LED tail lights and a flat rear profile contribute to the vehicle's tall stance.

Kia Syros SUV - Engine 

Specific engine details about the Kia Syros are not yet disclosed, however, it is expected that Kia may offer a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine or a 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine. It's speculated that both engine options could be available across different variants, paired with manual and automatic transmission  choices.

The micro SUV segment is currently witnessing significant traction in India, with models like Tata Punch leading in monthly sales for the past two months. Tata offers a range of powertrain options including petrol, CNG and electric, which has contributed to its success. Kia may also consider offering multiple powertrain choices to cater to a broader customer base with its upcoming entry-level product.
